Solo Travel in the Waiting Season: Why Booking the Trip Might Be Your Next Step of Faith

There's a particular kind of tired that comes from waiting. Waiting on the relationship. Waiting on the job. Waiting on the “next” that hasn't shown up yet. And somewhere in that waiting, a lot of us quietly put our lives on pause — including the parts of life that were never meant to wait on anyone else's timeline. Travel is usually one of the first things to go. I'll go when I have someone to go with. I'll go when things settle down. I'll go when I feel ready.

Here's a gentler way to think about it: booking a trip by yourself isn't giving up on the waiting. It's refusing to let the waiting steal your joy in the meantime.

Waiting Doesn't Have to Mean Stalling

Scripture never tells us to put life on hold while we wait on God — it tells us to wait well.

That's an active posture, not a frozen one. There's a difference between waiting on God's timing for one specific thing and treating your whole life as a waiting room until that thing arrives.

A solo trip is a small, concrete way to practice that difference. It says: I trust God with my future, and I'm still going to go live today.

You Don't Need a Reason Other Than “I Wanted To”

One of the sneakier lies of a waiting season is that joy has to be earned or explained. You don't need to justify a trip with a milestone, a breakup, or a burnout. “I wanted to see the ocean” is a complete sentence. Wanting rest, beauty, or a change of scenery is reason enough — it doesn't have to be a reward for anything.

Practical Ground Rules for Your First Solo Trip

If the idea excites you but the logistics feel intimidating, start smaller than you think you need to.

• Pick a place with an easy “yes.” Somewhere with good public transit, a language you're comfortable in, and a low-key safety reputation. You can go bigger and bolder on trip two.
• Book the first night before you land. You don't need the whole trip planned, but knowing exactly where you're sleeping the first night removes a huge amount of arrival-day stress.
• Loop someone in on your plans. Share your itinerary and check-in times with a friend or family member — not out of fear, but out of wisdom.
• Let the trip have a rhythm, not just a checklist. Mornings for exploring, afternoons for rest, evenings for something quiet. A solo trip that's wall-to-wall sightseeing can leave you more depleted than when you started.
• Bring something to process with. A journal, a devotional, or just your own honest prayers. Solo travel has a way of surfacing exactly what's been sitting under the surface at home — let it.
